Efforts to place 72 Olympic medals in Hope Hall have been thwarted

Members of the 1972 US Olympic basketball team talked about getting back the silver medals they vowed never to accept and left behind in Germany.

No, they still don’t want them for themselves.

They believe the medals belong to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, but a recent attempt to obtain them from the International Olympic Committee was thwarted.

To get the medals at a home in the Hall of Fame – whose induction ceremony for the 2022 Class is taking place this weekend – the IOC told players they must first accept them.

“If we had to accept them, that wouldn’t be an option,” said Tom Burleson, a mediator from North Carolina who played on the team.
