Hershey Beers have signed Dylan Strom’s younger brother Matthew for a year-long AHL deal

On Thursday, the Hershey Bears family announced their signature forward Matthew Strom And defender Michael Kim on AHL contracts for the 2022-23 season.

Matthew (pictured) is the younger brother of the Washington Capitals striker Dylan Strom (left) and Anaheim Ducks striker Ryan Strom (centre). Last season, the Mississauga native split between the Phantom Lehigh Valley at AHL and Reading Royals at ECHL.

The 23-year-old winger was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft. He made his professional hockey debut with the Phantoms in the 2018-19 season and has moved between the AHL and ECHL levels ever since.

The six-foot-four, 210-pound striker won the OHL Championship with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2019 as captain. He played against Dylan at OHL for two seasons while the latter was starring with Erie Otters.

Dylan was signed by The Capitals this season on a one-year, $3.5 million contract. He marks the team’s second line center while Niklas Backstrom rehabilitates from hip surgery.

Beers agrees terms with Kim Strom on AHL contracts

(Hershey, PA- September 8, 2022) – IN Hershey Beers Today, the club announced the signing of defender Michael Kim and striker Matthew Strom on the contracts of the American Hockey League for the 2022-23 season. The announcement was made by Hershey’s Vice President of Hockey Operations Brian Helmer.

Kim, 27, made 26 appearances for the Springfield Thunderbirds last season, scoring seven assists. Toronto, Ontario time split with the ECHL Maine Mariners as he amassed 21 points (2g, 19a) in 33 games. He also added three assistants in six playoff games for Maine.

The 5’11-inch, 195-pound bluebell skated in 49 AHL games with Wilkes-Barry/Scranton and Springfield, and made 10 assists. He also earned 52 points (6g, 46a) in 123 games during his career with Wheeling and Main.

Before turning professional, Kim played four seasons at Boston College, serving as the co-leader in his freshman and junior years. He helped the Eagles to the Eastern Hockey Championship in 2018 and earned third honors for the All-Star Team in the conference.

Strom, 23, made 63 appearances for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last season, scoring 16 points (5g, 11a), while also scoring seven points (3g, 4a) in six games for ECHL’s Reading Royals.

The Mississauga, Ontario native was selected by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft and split his first three professional seasons between the AHL and ECHL. In his AHL career with Lehigh Valley, Strom collected 23 points (8g, 15a) in 91 games, while he scored 34 points (15g, 19a) in 57 ECHL games with Reading and Greenville.

The 6’4″, 210-pound winger was the Ontario Hockey League champion with Hamilton in 2018 and served as the club’s captain in 2018-19 when he finished second on the team by scoring 79 points (28g, 51a). Strom’s older brother, Ryan, is a forward for the Anaheim Ducks, while his other brother, Dylan, was signed this summer by Hershey’s NHL team, the Washington Capitals, after skiing with the Chicago Blackhawks last season.
