Stumbled Americans lose another star, put DJ LeMahieu on IL

New York (AFP) – Injured New York Yankees put DJ Lou Mahaeu on their 10-day injury list Thursday with an infection in his right second toe.

LeMahieu had been dealing with injury for several weeks but managed to play through the discomfort until recently, missing the first three games of the New York series against Minnesota. Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes the problem was already starting to affect LeMahieu during a three-game game in Boston from August 12-14.

One of New York’s most consistent hitters, the two-time batting champion was 0 for 12 last weekend in Tampa Bay and has sparred on the plate since that week at Fenway Park, hitting only .143 (10 for 70) with no additional base hits during the last 18 match him.

“It was just sore and I think it really kept him from getting off his swing,” Boone said. “I’m talking about these guys, they’re like race cars. Something’s malfunctioning and preventing you from being that race car.”

The Yankees had hoped that their trusted LeMahieu could avoid IL. That view changed Thursday, with Boone noting that therapy and playing through the pain simply didn’t work well enough.

“There are painful things. We talked about his orthotics. We talked about the treatments they do every day,” Boone said. Are there other safe and effective injections? These are all things they talk about.”
