Baseball Operations Analyst

Position summary:
The San Francisco Giants team is looking for analysts to join the baseball operations division. These individuals will be part of the research and development team with a primary focus on creating decision-making tools and providing research and analysis in support of the Baseball Operations Division. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical people, and both a passion and intellectual curiosity for baseball.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Research, design, and test predictive and statistical models using data and technology to support all aspects of baseball operations
  • Collaborate with the software engineering team to design and integrate decision support systems and tools into baseball systems
  • Conduct statistical analysis and quantitative research to support different areas of baseball operations.
  • Effectively communicate analysis to baseball operations personnel.
  • Maintain an understanding of new public baseball research and emerging statistical tools, as well as all data/technology options for potential vendors

Skills and qualifications:

  • A degree in a quantitative field, such as statistics, economics, engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics.
  • Demonstrate work (professional or personal) using any of R, SQL, Python
  • Experience in any of the following areas is an added advantage:
    • machine learning
    • computer vision
    • spatiotemporal data
    • Statistical inference
  • 1-2 years of athletic experience and/or background in baseball or softball is an added advantage.
  • Passion and curiosity for baseball analytics and problem solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic with initiative and attention to detail.

Associate Baseball Operations Analyst

Site: Small League Affiliates (Sacramento, Richmond, Eugene, San Jose)

Period: January 2023 – October 2023

Position summary:
This person will travel with a small league team and provide on-site analytics and technical support serving the staff and players
With assistance in implementing major organizational initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess technical skills, the ability to communicate effectively with non-technical people, and both a passion and intellectual curiosity for baseball.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide statistical analysis and quantitative research to support the affiliated training staff
  • Implementation of presetting and game reporting
  • Conduct a search for special requests from coaches and staff
  • Use technology and information to assess player strengths and areas for development
  • Educate coaches and players on relevant baseball analytics topics
  • Support field needs, including but not limited to playback technologies such as Trackman Portable, Blast, Rapsodo, and Trackman

Skills and qualifications:

  • Understand current baseball analytics topics
  • Experience with Excel, SQL, R or Python
  • Experience with current player development technology such as TrackMan, Rapsodo, Blast Motion bat sensors, or K-Vest

Video Technology Assistant (Affiliate)

Division: player development
Reports to: Minor League Video Technology Coordinator
Period: February 2023 – September 2023
condition: Part-time seasonal job (requirement to travel and work non-traditional hours)

Position summary:
Provide comprehensive on- and off-pitch video and technology support for coaches, players and non-regular staff during spring training and during the minor league season at a designated affiliate. Spring Training will be used as a month-long training period to understand the giants’ video, technology assembly and organizational processes, as well as build relationships with the employees and players you will be working with. A minor league season will consist of working closely with a range of staff and players and providing as much support as necessary to help players continue their development and team performance.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Create, capture, process, and distribute high-quality video footage for all home and road games of the season
  • Use BATS Video Software to draw, manipulate, and store all your collected videos
  • Create, view and organize advanced video footage of each upcoming opponent
  • Operate Edgertronic (high speed) camera technology manually and through a browser to collect targeted shots during both gaming and non-gaming activity.
  • Play and troubleshoot other baseball related technologies, such as TrackMan V3, Portable TrackMan, Hawkeye, Blast and Oculus all season
  • Extensive use of various baseball neighbor applications (Dropbox, Google Drive, remote desktop software, video editing software, etc…) to edit, transfer and store video and data for short and long term use
  • Manage and take care of the various video equipment and technology that you will be responsible for using throughout the season (computers, iPads, VR headsets, cameras, etc.)
  • Assisting with various custom projects assigned by front office and coaching staff

Skills and qualifications:

  • The ability and willingness to commute and work unconventional hours (nights, weekends, and holidays) throughout the season
  • Extreme focus on detail and mentality in all daily tasks
  • Ability to communicate and work comfortably with all members of the organization (players, coaches, staff and various front office/staff members)
  • Efficiency and convenience with core networks and IT operations
  • Previous baseball or softball playing experience and/or experience related to video and technology is an added advantage
  • Have a strong and obvious passion and curiosity for baseball

Associate, Baseball Video Systems (San Francisco)

Reports to: Baseball Video Systems Manager
Period: January 2023 – December 2023
condition: Internship

Position summary:
This associate level position will perform routine duties around the video office, club, and stadium, while also providing support with essential administrative responsibilities and system maintenance. This role will be included with the Major League club during home games and working alongside coaching staff, analysts and video coordinators throughout the 2023 season, including spring training in Arizona. The ideal candidate will also possess creative and storytelling abilities, and utilize these skills to produce short video content on a regular basis.

Season responsibilities:

  • Baseball Regulatory Video Systems Inspection and Maintenance
  • Organize and operate video and tracking technologies for use before the game
  • Publish daily channel lists and schedules for MLB, affiliate and amateur game broadcasts
  • iPad MLB Dugout management support
  • Post-event video production is melting away from pre-consumer games on mobile devices
  • Production of squad and rosters information for use at the club
  • Moving, packing and unloading equipment to support team travel
  • Other duties assigned by the video crew

Off-season responsibilities:

  • Cataloging broadcasts of footage from the Winter League and other off-season baseball games
  • Publish daily channel lists and schedules for the Winter League
  • Winter League daily video snippet of giant regulatory players and follow the free agent
  • Assist with field-level camera maintenance and installation
  • Work with the coaching staff on ideas for video content
